Te Paepae o Aotea hosts its annual whole-school Inter-Awa Swimming Sports in Term 1 at the Hāwera Aquatic Centre. Students compete within their Awa and age groups to earn valuable points towards the coveted Ki te Hoe award at the end of the year.
A highlight of the day is seeing students dressed proudly in their Awa colours, showing their support, enthusiasm and awa spirit.
Students can choose to participate in one of two sections. Our competitive swimmers have the opportunity to showcase their skills in traditional swimming events like:
For students who are less confident in the water, there are a variety of non-competitive fun events including:
The day concludes with the thrilling finals of champion 50-metre races, Inter-Awa relay events, and the ever-popular student versus teacher relay. These events are always a highlight, creating a fantastic atmosphere and bringing the school community together in a celebration of participation, teamwork, and school spirit.
Each year, our top Year 7-8 competitive swimmers have the opportunity to represent Te Paepae o Aotea at the Taranaki Year 7-8 Swimming Championships. Students compete against talented swimmers from schools across Taranaki, showcasing their skills and determination in the pool.
Held annually during Term 1 at a different host venue each year, this event provides an exciting day of competition, personal achievement, and school pride. It is a fantastic opportunity for students to challenge themselves and represent Te Paepae o Aotea at a regional level.
Year 7 and 8 students have the opportunity to develop their swimming skills each week during Taha Tinana/PE classes in the Te Paepae o Aotea school pool. Located beside the Jubilee Gym, our heated pool provides an ideal environment for students to build confidence in the water while learning and practising essential swimming skills.
During Term 1, students can also enjoy lunchtime swimming sessions under supervision, offering a fun and refreshing way to make the most of the warm summer days.
