04 Jun Taranaki Rohe Nga Manu Kōrero and Pae Rangitahi
Term two marked a momentous occasion as Te Paepae o Aotea proudly presented its first ever kapa haka roopu at the renowned Pae Rangatahi event. This gathering showcased the talent of 12 secondary schools from te rohe o Aotea, as they united to deliver awe-inspiring performances.
Our roopu embarked on a transformative seven week journey, centered in the embrace of Kimihia te Rangimarie. During this period, we had the privilege of learning from esteemed local tutors, including the skillful guidance of Tere Diamond, Maruera Maraki, Sunnie Hurunui and Te Ruinga Diamond. Every student in our group wholeheartedly embraced the rigorous campaign, delving into new learnings of waiata, moteatea and haka.
The day of the performance arrived and our students stood resolute and well-prepared. While nervousness lingered in the air, the unwavering support of whānau, kura and friends bolstered our kaihaka as they took the stage for the first time as Te Paepae o Aotea. In front of an audience of thousands, our roopu delivered an exceptional and mesmerizing bracket, exceeding all expectations, as we reached new heights, in line with our whakatauākī.

From the outset, our goal was to form a cohesive and accomplished group to participate in Pae Rangatahi. Therefore, the news of our students’ impressive 4th placing brought overwhelming surprise. Te Paepae o Aotea extends heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved, including our devoted whānau, dedicated cooks, motivated students and supportive teachers. A special acknowledgment goes to our exceptional tutors who made significant sacrifices to nurture and initiate our roopu on this remarkable journey.
